The story of Låven
The barn at Hov was completed in 2018 after almost two years of renovation. It was originally built in the 1950s by Tor Jensen and Åge Hov, the great-grandfather and grandfather of Frode Hov, who now owns the farm. The ambition was to create an unpretentious, genuine and relaxing place with tasty local food rooted in the farm’s history and food traditions.
The northeast side of the barn has large glass windows with views of the white Hovstranda beach, the midnight sun and the northern lights. Our neighbour, Anne, has made the beautiful and sturdy tables from centuries-old wood from a local house. The lamps in the ceiling are the original milk buckets from the farm.
In the project, we spent a lot of time and resources taking care of the actual construction of the building. The fine lighting in the ceiling emphasises this and creates a unique atmosphere. The high ceiling also gives a special atmosphere where the talja and the log that the talja was pulled by when bringing in the hay from a large hatch on the southwest wall hang.
The walls on the inside are also original. You can still see remnants of concrete on the walls as great-grandfather Tor first used the timber to form two storeys of concrete before the same timber was used for the walls of the barn. We’ve put our hearts into preserving the original building, while at the same time keeping it modern with insulation, ventilation and a heating system that keeps our guests warm and happy in all seasons.
A large glass fireplace and soft retro furniture create a lovely atmosphere on dark winter evenings. Here you can enjoy a good meal, with a beautiful view, or just relax by the fireplace with a good book and beer from Lofoten. We also welcome children, and have a play corner and children’s menu to offer our youngest guests.
